PhD in Industrial Engineering: Essential Requirements for Aspiring Doctoral Candidates

The Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (DIEOR) at University of the Philippines-Diliman offers three (3) options for pursuing a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering:

Option A: Straight MS-Ph.D.

This track is for those admitted to the program with any bachelor’s degree with Undergraduate Thesis, Feasibility Study or Research-Based Special Project with RRL. A total of 64 units is required including dissertation units.

Requirements: Straight MS-Ph.D. Track (with Prior Bachelor’s Degree with Thesis)
  • Any prior bachelor’s degree with Undergraduate Thesis, Feasibility Study or Research-Based Special Project with RRL.
  • Diagnostic Exam with the following course topics:
    • College Statistics (e.g. IE 27 or equivalent) Industrial Materials and Processes (e.g. IE 21 or equivalent)
    • Operations Research (e.g. IE 41 or equivalent)
    • Calculus (e.g. Math 23 or equivalent)
    • Computational Skills or experience familiar with at least one programming language (e.g. CS 11 or ES 26 or its equivalent)

Option B: Regular Ph.D., Master’s Degree with or without Thesis/Dissertation Intake

This track is for those admitted to the program with a master’s degree from a related discipline with or without a thesis/dissertation. A total of 39 units is required including dissertation units.

Requirements: Regular Ph.D. Track (prior Master’s Degree with Thesis)
  • Master’s Degree with Thesis
  • Master’s Thesis/Dissertation or Research-Based Special Project with RRL
  • Course competencies (Diagnostic Exam or Equivalency Application):
    • Regression and Design of Experiments (e.g. IE 230 Statistical Design and Analysis for Engineers or its equivalent)
    • Deterministic Operations Research (e.g. IE 241 Operations Research I or its equivalent)
    • Production Systems (e.g. IE 231 Analysis of Production Systems or its equivalent)
    • Computational Skills or experience familiar with at least one programming language (e.g. CS 11 or ES 26 or its equivalent)
Requirements: Regular Ph.D. Track (prior Master’s Degree without Thesis)
  • Master’s Degree without Thesis
  • One (1) primary authored publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals or conferences endorsed by the Program Committee in the past 5 years
  • Course competencies (Diagnostic Exam or Equivalency Application):
    • Regression and Design of Experiments (e.g. IE 230 Statistical Design and Analysis for Engineers or its equivalent)
    • Deterministic Operations Research (e.g. IE 241 Operations Research I or its equivalent)
    • Production Systems (e.g. IE 231 Analysis of Production Systems or its equivalent)
    • Computational Skills or experience familiar with at least one programming language (e.g. CS 11 or ES 26 or its equivalent)

Option C: Ph.D. by Research

This track is for those admitted to the program with a master’s degree from a related discipline with thesis/dissertation and with significant research experience (at least two primary authored publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals or conferences, endorsed by the Program Committee, in the past five (5) years). A total of 27 units is required including dissertation units.

Requirements: Ph.D. by Research Track (with prior Master’s degree with Thesis)
  • Master’s Degree with Thesis
  • Two (2) primary authored publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals or conferences endorsed by the Program Committee in the past 5 years.
  • Course competencies (Diagnostic Exam or Equivalency Application):
    • Regression and Design of Experiments (e.g. IE 230 Statistical Design and Analysis for Engineers or its equivalent)
    • Deterministic Operations Research (e.b. IE 241 Operations Research I or its equivalent)
    • Production Systems (e.g. IE 231 Analysis of Production Systems or its equivalent)
    • Computational Skills or experience familiar with at least one programming language (e.g. CS 11 or ES 26 or its equivalent)
  1. Recommendation from at least two (2) former professors or mentors to establish intellectual capacity, psychological readiness, and aptitude towards post baccalaureate studies and research.
  2. If the applicant’s baccalaureate’s institution’s main medium of instructions is NOT English, the applicant is required to have a certification passing an English language proficiency test recognized by the University.
  3. Health Certificate and other additional and special admission requirements imposed by the Office of the University Registrar and the Program Committee of the implementing institution.
  4. Diagnostic Exam or equivalency application to evaluate proficiency in specified course topics.
  5. Program Adviser acceptance.
  6. Program of Study.
